Kentlands - MD

• Description

  • One of the first New Urbanist towns in America, begun in 1988 in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Developer Joe Alfandre bought the 352-acre Kent farm estate in 1987 and enlisted DPZ CoDesign (Andrés Duany & Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk) to design it. A walkable, mixed-use community — 1,915 dwelling units and 870,000 sq ft of retail — with a connected street plan, houses close to the road, and no cul-de-sacs. Received a Time magazine “best of 1991” award.
